I used a pen tip popped both “sponges” out and rinsed them with water and voila they were once again white. Whatever has jammed the purge unit into the the carriage asm can't be fixed without taking the printer apart. my review here
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Dry the whole thing with a very dry clean rag or a high quality paper towel. Reinstalled and had this error for the print head.Found this page and then found some strange little square of plaastic paper stuck in the white roller mechanism. Moving the heads back and forward didn't help me.

Used diluted napisan (oxygen-based cleaning agent in the ratio of 1:3 with powder:water) and soaked paper towel6. When the power is off try and move the carriage by hand, but never force it. When we see it in the shop, 9 out of 10 times its a jammed purge unit. replied4 years ago. useful reference If the error persists, unfortunately, the printer will require servicing to resolve the issue.

I gave it a try but concluded that getting to whatever had locked the carriage would entail major disassembly to the point that I would be better off taking it in Can you help?
Never had any problem with it. It is not all the way to the right but approximately 1 1/2 from the complete right of the carriage resting area.Once blotting was complete:-Carriage returned to resting position to the I didn't see the sponges at first, as there was a white backwards “L” shaped plastic piece that had a spring attached to it. As the ip4000 is similar then maybe you will find the wiper unit over there too.
I can find nothing. Nothing will fix it.However I think the most likely cause is a blocked printhead that the printers cleaning system can't clear. What do you think? It isn't going to hurt anything if it overflows a little.
It was printing a word document, double-sided (duplex print) and suddenly on the 3rd page, a big "crunch" sound. and removed and replaced ink carts (which normally light up but now don't). I turned the printer back on and it works great!!BTW, Cannon did want me to send it for sevice too!!! Just moved the printer head aside and cleaned out ink as instructed in previous posts.
