There was one position on the zoom dial that will take a clear picture but it took a while to find it. These materials love to cling to the camera by electrostatic build-up from the camera rubbing against the side of the case (especially those cases with soft fibrous intreriors). imp source
i was freaking out when i got this problem on my canon digital ixus i7 and to think all i need to do was fix #4 to solve it all! I shook or "tremored" my hand while the lens extended and it seemed to work. i just put in the cord again and this time it worked!
Judging from comments I see in online forums here and here, this is indeed a bad thing. A repair shop had estimated £50 just to open it up (no guarantee of fixing it) and it was all looking hopeless... If you hear this click, immediately stop and try the camera.
