I sure laugh because of that little switch on my memory card. The toothpick tip didn't work, but amazingly the tape trick worked! I've tried different sizes and brands of cards, both new and used. How Do You Unlock A Sandisk Memory Card Then start the camera without any card installed.

Format the card AFTER you've recovered your photos. Have you find the aswer? I don't recommend this to anyone not comfortable working with electronics, but it something to look at (bent pins) when/if getting the generic memory card error.
