All I am trying to do is write the "hello world" web page that uses annotations for spring MVC using maven and eclipse. Im using Eclipse (Indigo) to develop and Tomcat7. Is there a jar file I need or should I copy the ContextListener.class provided in the Tomcat 5 servlet-examples in a particular folder of my project? I just hit "shift-alt-x r" and it works.

I just look in the directories of the archive and Tomcat to see what .jar files are in directories that are in the classpath. Maybe I am still not understanding, but where do I place what files? But you are right the classes weren't being deploed by Eclipse .
